Case Study: European Union Aims to Realign Needs of Student and Teacher in Digital Age

[July 2017] Having grown up with computers, Google and smartphones, students of the millennial generation and younger are very comfortable with the concept of learning via technology. In contrast, traditional pedagogy has not kept pace with the possibilities information technology can offer.

Declining graduation rates suggest that a disconnect in learning preferences vs the reality of today’s instruction has caused students to disengage from education.

To combat this trend, a group of educators in Europe have collaborated to discover new ways teachers and students can use Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in learning. Led by CuroGens Learning chief learning officer Ole Hjorth, the Erasmus+ project, ANLA (A New Learning Arena) aims to create new means for using technology in teaching practices.

The multi-phase research in which six countries are participating is reported in a case study examining how common learning theories, educational organizations and ICT can be combined to uncover new methodologies and best practices that meet the expectations of students in the 21st century.
