What’s New in Microsoft Dynamics 365?

Beginning October 2019, Microsoft will put several notable changes to Dynamics 365 into effect. Among them licensing updates, new fraud protection and restructuring of Finance and Operations. In this blog, we will take a quick look at these changes to ensure you’re informed and can ask your service provider the right questions.

Licensing Changes
One of the most noticeable changes will be Licensing updates. Previously when the Finance and Operations module was purchased, it was a multi-application, “one-size-fits-all” solution for Customer Engagement and Unified Operations. The change is now formatted around a single app purchase that will be considered a “Base,” and then a-la-cart style building, where individual apps can be purchased as “Attach.” There will be separate licensing attached to each of these. The Base license must be purchased first and will be more expensive in order for Attach licenses (less expensive) to be purchased. This change will affect all Volume Licensing programs—including Enterprise Agreement (EA), Enterprise Agreement Subscription (EAS), Enrollment for Education (EES), Server and Cloud Enrollment (SCE), Microsoft Product Service Agreement (MPSA), Web Direct and Cloud Solution Provider.

Under Unified Operations, there will now be four separate applications: Talent, Retail, Finance and Supply Chain Management. Finance and Operations were previously bundled together as one module. This change predominantly affects pricing, allowing customers to pick the apps they need the most, purchase one Base app and Attach apps for others as needed. Additional user licenses (outside of the minimum per app) come with additional costs.

Fraud Protection
Another key focus for 2020 includes improvements to Fraud Protection. According to Microsoft, approximately 2.2% of revenue is lost to fraud. The company’s solution is to find innovative ways to protect e-commerce. Here are three outcomes for which they are aiming:

  • Reduce fraud and fraud related costs across all service customers
  • Immediate access to extensive fraud protection intelligence gained as a global e-commerce merchant
  • Deliver better purchase experience though tools that reduce friction and improve support

How is Microsoft addressing this?  In the D365 environment there are three protocols in place to help combat fraud. First, they’re harnessing the adaptive AI to identify fraud using data from participating enterprise customers. This technology is scalable and offers highly accurate risk assessment. Second, they’re offering a Virtual Fraud Analyst that allows individual merchants to take a close look their ecommerce traffic. This analyst allows for choice in appropriate risk control policies. Finally, Microsoft is highlighting the added protection of the Azure Cloud Services which provides scalable, reliable performance and security features.

Other Services that work together with Dynamics 365 that are included with the full user are:

  • Power Apps
  • Microsoft Flow
  • Power BI

Power Apps gives the option for extending and customized applications. Microsoft Flow give automation capabilities for business processes and workflow. Power BI delivers business intelligence.
